A resume provides potential employers a first impression of you as an employee

A resume is an outline of your educational and professional accomplishments and is often required when applying for employment. Your resume gives an idea of what you would be like as an employee and is the first impression a potential employer will have of you. A well-constructed resume can make the difference in securing an interview and, ultimately, a job. Your resume should expand as you gain new experience.

Instructions

    • 1

Open your word processor and select a standard font such as Arial or Times New Roman. Make sure the size is set to 12. Type your name, permanent address, phone number, and email address as a heading at the top of the page.

    • 2

Type "Objective" in the left margin two lines under your heading. Skip a line and write a statement outlining your career objectives. Adjust this statement as needed if you apply for different types of positions.

    • 3

Move the cursor down 2 lines and type "Education" in the left margin. Skip a line and list your educational experience in chronological order starting with the most recent. Include the institution name, degree or certificate earned, field of study, awards, recognitions and attendance dates.

    • 4

Skip two more lines and type "Work Experience" in the left margin. List your job related experience in the same fashion as your educational experience, beginning with the most recent. Only list previous jobs if they are relevant to the position you are applying for.

    • 5

Move down two lines and type "Skills" in the left margin. Make a bullet list of job skills that your potential employer may be looking for. Use action words and do not type in full sentences.

    • 6

Type "References" in the left margin, two lines under the "Skills" portion. List the full name and contact information for at least two professional references. Seek permission from these individuals before listing them on your resume.

    • 7

Print your resume on plain white paper. Make sure your ink cartridge is full to prevent faded text or lines on your resume.
