Hosting a local Left 4 Dead server

Hosting a Left 4 Dead server has several advantages. A hosted server allows for greater control over who can play in a specific Left 4 Dead match. It also allows for hosting unofficial game modifications that enhance game play and enjoyment. Within Left 4 Dead, Valve has included the ability to host a server directly from a player's computer.

Instructions

    • 1

Launch Left 4 Dead from the Steam client. Under the My Games tab, locate Left 4 Dead. Right click and choose "Launch Game."

    • 2

Choose a game play mode from the in-game menu. All game play modes with the exception of single player are valid choices.

    • 3

Select "Play Online." From the Available Online Campaigns screen, choose "Create Lobby" to go to the Game Settings screen.

    • 4

Change the "Server Type" option to be "Local Server." Click "Create Lobby" to begin hosting the game.

    • 5

Click the "Start the Game" option once other players have entered the lobby to begin the campaign.

Tips & Warnings

  • It is possible to enter many command line options from the console if hosting a local Left 4 Dead server. See the complete list of command line options available from Valve's developer resource site.

  • If you are hosting a local server from the same machine used for game play, there may be a slight performance hit due to the extra overhead of hosting the local server.
