How to Install a TV above a Gas Fireplace
Installing your flat-screen TV on the wall is a practical way to save space at home. One of the most popular places to install a TV is above the fireplace; however, doing so requires taking some safety measures. Fortunately, if you have the right equipment and someone to assist you, the task can be finished in several hours. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Measure both your flat-screen television and the space above your fireplace to ensure that you have the necessary wall space. Make sure to take into account the TV's frame.
-
2
Attach a thermometer to the wall above your fireplace (where the TV will go) using tape.
-
-
3
Turn on the gas fireplace and let it run for several hours.
-
4
Check the temperature on the thermometer once your fireplace has been on for several hours. If the temperature is above 100 degrees Fahrenheit, you could shorten the lifespan of your TV. Consider using a different wall if the one above your fireplace will routinely become this hot.

Consult the owner's manual for your TV to determine what size of wall mounting bracket is appropriate for your TV. The bracket needs to be compatible with your VESA (Video Electronics Standard Association) number located in your manual, and it must also be compatible with your TV's weight. Every flat screen TV model has a different layout on the back, and the VESA number will let you know the exact measurements your bracket should have. The VESA indicates the distance between each hole that will correspond to your mounting bracket. For example, if your TV has a mounting measurement of 36 inches between each hole that connects to the bracket, then your TV bracket needs to have 36 inches between each hole so that it fits your TV and they can be screwed together. Once you match the VESA to a bracket, look for a bracket that will support your TV's weight. For example, if your TV weighs 100 lbs., look for a bracket that can also hold 100 lbs. of weight.

Use a stud finder to locate two wall studs above your fireplace. Move the stud finder across the wall until it signals that it has located a stud. Mark the stud with a pencil. Repeat to locate and mark a second stud.

7
Start by attaching the back of your TV to the part of the bracket that holds your TV. Usually flat screen mounting brackets have two parts: one part attaches to the TV and one part attaches to the wall. Place the TV bracket against the back of your TV, matching the holes on the bracket to the holes on your TV, and use the screws that came with your bracket to attach it to the TV, screwing tightly. Now you can attach your TV to the wall bracket.

Attach the wall piece of the mounting bracket. Drill two holes into the studs you have marked. (Some brackets work with only one stud, but most will require two.) Use a level to mark the holes you will drill. Use the power drill to drive the screws where you have marked. Once the bracket is attached to the wall, test to ensure that it does not move in any direction.

9
Lift the TV and line up the TV bracket with the wall bracket. You will need someone to assist you. Attach the brackets using a screwdriver to drive in the screws that came with your mounting bracket. Your TV should now be firmly attached to the wall.

Tips & Warnings
Choose where your cable wires will run through before you attach your TV set to the wall. If the wires on your TV go on the back, attach them before you place the TV on the wall.
If possible, attach your bracket to a stud located at the exact center of the wall.
Stone and brick walls will require a special mount and screws.
