Many people who own trailers don't use them on a regular basis. Because the tires on a trailer aren't necessarily rotated on a regular basis, they can become dry rotted. Dry rot is a process that eats away the rubber of the tire, and causes the tire to be unstable. Diligent care of trailer tires can prevent dry rot.

Instructions

    • 1

Ensure that you are using a high-quality trailer tire.

    • 2

Look on the tire's sidewall to determine the proper air pressure. Fill the tire to that air pressure while the tires are cold--before you tow your trailer. Check the air pressure every time you use the trailer.

    • 3

Do not use household cleaners or anything petroleum-based on the tires, as they will damage the protective waxes that manufacturers use on the tires.

    • 4

Tires that are still for long periods of time should be wiped down with a product such as 303 Aerospace Protectant or Eimann Fabrik Black Opal Dressing, available at RV stores. These dressings help protect tires from the elements.

    • 5

Use the tires on a regular basis, even if it is only to ride around the block, to help prevent flat spots on the tires and to keep them in shape.
