How to Remove the Transmission Dipstick Tube From a 2000 Jeep Cherokee
The 2000 Jeep Cherokee automatic transmission dipstick tube serves two purposes. The dipstick or filler tube contains the transmission dipstick, allowing you to monitor the level of fluid in your transmission for optimum performance. The tube also serves as the fill point when you need to add transmission fluid to your Jeep. It is located on the passenger side of the Jeep and runs from the transmission, up the back of the engine to the engine compartment.

1
Raise the passenger side of the Jeep with a jack and support it with a jack stand under the front axle housing or frame. The Jeep Cherokee is a uni-body vehicle and does not have a real frame rail, so the axle housing is the preferred point for the jack stand.
-
2
Locate the dipstick tube near the front of the transmission just above the transmission pan. It slides into the transmission using an O-ring to seal it at the transmission case. Place an oil drain pan under the transmission just below the tube to catch any drips.

3
Locate the retaining bolt about halfway up the tube. The bolt runs through a mounting bracket and threads into the transmission bell housing. Remove the bolt with a socket and ratchet, setting the bolt aside for now.
-
4
Pull up on the tube while twisting it slightly until it pulls out of the hole in the transmission. Make sure the rubber O-ring comes out with the tube. If it does not, you will need to pull it out of the filler tube hole before reinstalling the tube or the tube will not seal.
