Instructions

    • 1

Find a patch of denim that matches the jeans. You can purchase a denim patch at a craft store, or just cut a patch from a pair of old denim jeans. Make sure the patch is at least 1/2 inch larger than the hole or rip you are mending.

    • 2

Turn the jeans inside out, center the patch over the hole, and make sure that the proper side of the patch appears through the jeans. Pin the patch into place with sewing pins by placing the pins around the edges of the patch and through the jeans.

    • 3

Set your sewing machine to a three-step zigzag stitch; use an embroidery foot, a needle for heavy fabrics, and thread color that blends well with the jeans. Place the jeans, still inside out, under the foot, and make sure that the edge of the patch is slightly to the right of the needle.

    • 4

Remove the pins and sew around the patch. Sew in a way that the right side of the zigzag is slightly to the right of the patch. After you finish sewing around the patch, pull the threads to the back of the jeans, cut and tie them off.

Tips & Warnings

  • Avoid using iron-on patches because they tend to come off after a couple of washes.
