Cell phones can be linked to Google Maps.

Many smart phones on the market today come equipped with built-in GPS chips. This can enable the phones to be used as portable navigation devices using software, such as Google Maps. Unfortunately, certain mobile carriers lock out the GPS functionality on their phones in an attempt to force the user to use carrier issued navigation. This is the case for Verizon's Motorola Q9c smartphone. Luckily though there is a workaround to get your Motorola Q9c's GPS up and running in no time.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the Internet Explorer application from the phone's start menu. In the web browser navigate to http://m.google.com/maps and download the Google Maps application. This application enables your phone to provide you with turn-by-turn directions, as well as maps. Once installed close the program and return to the main menu.

    • 2

Place the Bluetooth GPS receiver near the cell phone and put it into discovery mode, which allows you phone to "see" the GPS device. This is usually done by holding a designated button on the device for three to five seconds. Generally the lights on the receiver will blink rapidly to indicate that it is in this special mode.

    • 3

Navigate to the "Paired Devices" menu on the cell phone and select the option entitled "Add A Device." A list of all Bluetooth-enabled devices in range should appear. From this list select the name of the GPS receiver. If prompted for a passkey, type in 0-0-0-0, which is the default code. At this point both your phone and your GPS receiver are in sync and should recognize each other.

    • 4

Relaunch the Google Maps application. To ensure that the phone and the GPS receiver are working properly, type in a destination. The phone should then display a list of turn-by-turn directions. If it does, then you have successfully enabled GPS functionality on your Motorola Q9c smartphone.

Tips & Warnings

  • Before using the Google Maps, it is important to ensure that the phone is paired with the Bluetooth GPS device or else the application will not be able to function properly.

  • Be sure to verify that you have an unlimited data plan, as navigation applications like Google Maps tend to use a large amount of data.
