How to Crochet Christmas Angels

Christmas is the perfect time to crochet handmade gifts for friends and family members. From ornaments to garland to stockings, you can crochet a variety of holiday items. Use your crochet skills to make angels, and hang them on your tree or use them to adorn the top. Use worsted-weight yarn for your angels to make them soft, or crochet thread to make them lacy.

Instructions

Crochet the head of your angel as a flat circle. Start by making two chain stitches, then make six double crochet stitches into the second chain from the hook and join with a slip stitch.

Crochet the body as a triangle attached to the head. Chain one, and make one single crochet stitch in each of the next three stitches. Chain three--which counts as a double crochet stitch--turn, and make one double crochet into the first single crochet, one into the second single crochet and two into the third single crochet for a total of five double crochet stitches. Chain three, turn and make one double crochet into the first double crochet, one in each of the next three double crochets and two in the last double crochet. Fasten off, cut your yarn and weave in your loose ends.

Crochet the wings. Make two crocheted rectangles for this. Start with four chain stitches, and make two double crochet stitches into the fourth chain from the hook. Now you have three double crochet stitches, because the beginning three chains count as one double crochet. Chain three, turn and make one double crochet in each of the first four stitches and two in the last stitch. Fasten off and weave in your ends, then repeat for the opposite wing. Sew the wings to the angel's back using a large-eye blunt needle and a spare length of yarn.

Dip your angel into liquid starch, squeeze out the excess and let it dry. This step is optional; it will make your crocheted angel stiff so she will hold her shape, which is useful if you want her to hang as an ornament. However, she won't be soft any more, so if you want to use her as a sewn embellishment or a brooch, skip this step.

Tie an extra length of yarn in a loop and attach it to the top of the angel's head for hanging.
