How to Add a Keyless Entry to a Toyota Matrix

The Toyota Matrix did not come standard with keyless entry or power door locks. However, all models with power door locks came equipped with keyless entry. If your Matrix has power door locks, you can add a keyless entry remote to it. If it does not, you cannot.

Because the Toyota Matrix and the Pontiac Vibe are twin vehicles (they are assembled in California in a joint-effort between GM and Toyota), the programming procedure also applies to the Pontiac Vibe.

Instructions

1. Sit down in the driver's seat with the driver's door open. Insert and remove the key twice (do not turn it while it's in the ignition).

2. Close the driver's door, then open it. Close it, and then open it again. Insert the key into the ignition, and then remove it.

3. Close the driver's door, then open it. Close it, and then open it again. Insert the key into the ignition and leave it. Close the driver's door.

4. Turn the ignition to "On," (without cranking) and then turn it back to "Off." Remove it from the ignition. Listen for the power door locks to cycle; if they don't, repeat the procedure.

5. Press and hold "Lock" and "Unlock" on the remote for approximately 1 1/2 seconds. Release the buttons, and then hold the "Lock" button for two seconds. When the door locks cycle, the remote is programmed to the Matrix.

Tips & Warnings

• Each step must be performed within 40 seconds of each other. Otherwise, the procedure will have to be restarted.
