How to Loosen the Nuts on Bolts

How to Loosen the Nuts on Bolts thumbnail
A stuck nut on the bolt can be difficult to remove.

Trying to remove nuts from bolts that have become rusty, stripped or stuck can turn a simple job into one of intense frustration. The thought of using a bolt cutter may make the job simpler, but this is not always the best solution. Sometimes the nuts and bolts are a special size, and it is not always easy to replace them. If you keep trying to turn the bolt, you can damage the corners of the bolt, making them rounded. When this happens, they are almost impossible to remove. By using a few simple tricks, it is possible to loosen the nut so you can reuse it again. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Spray or squirt penetrating oil liberally on, over and around the nut and bolt. Allow this to soak anywhere from 10 minutes to several hours or even overnight. Add a little more oil from time to time if you leave it sitting for several hours.

    • 2

Strike the head of the bolt lightly but sharply with a hammer, which helps to shock the connection of the bolt and nut. It may also help shift some of the rust off. You can also place a chisel on the head of the bolt. Hit the chisel head with the hammer several times.

    • 3

Spray the nut area with penetrating oil again.

    • 4

Use an open-ended wrench, vice-grips or socket that is the right size to remove the bolt. Sometimes you may need to hit the handle of the tool you are using with a rubber mallet to get it started. Turn the nut or bolt just a little bit to tighten it. Turn it the right way to loosen it.

Tips & Warnings

  • If using an adjustable wrench, tighten the jaws to hold the bolt securely, and always turn the wrench toward the lower jaw.

  • You can also heat the bolt, but care must be taken. The oil you applied is highly flammable. The surrounding area may be flammable or damaged from the flame.
