Making your own tied fleece pillow is an easy and fun project for young and old alike. You can make a tied fleece pillow to match a tied fleece blanket, which can be used for travel or just relaxing at home. Tied fleece pillows can be stuffed with a pre-made pillow that is simply covered by the fleece, or you can stuff the pillows using a square of foam or light-weight polyester fiber filling.

Things You'll Need

  • Fleece fabric
  • Pillow, square foam or polyester fiber filling
  • Scissors

Instructions

    • 1

Cut two squares of fleece fabric to your desired pillow size. Add four to six inches to each side to compensate for the length of your ties. For instance, if you want a pillow that is 12 inches by 12 inches, you should cut your squares 16 inches by 16 inches or 18 inches by 18 inches. To make your fabric perfectly square, create a square paper template to use as a pattern. Pin the pattern to the fabric and cut around the edges to create two identically sized squares.

    • 2

Lay one piece of fleece on top of the other, making sure all of the edges are evenly aligned. Tack the two pieces of fleece together using straight pins to ensure that the fabric remains even.

    • 3

Using a ruler and sewing pencil, mark off one inch sections around the entire pillow. If desired, you can also create a paper template to use as a pattern for marking your tie lines. The length of your marking line should be equal to the additional inches added to the dimensions of the pillow; either four or six inches.

    • 4

Cut the tie lines with sharp scissors to create your ties.

    • 5

Tie each tie section together. You can tie the pillow ties using a simple square knot, or a different decorative knot if you prefer. Work around the pillow until three sides have been tied together. If you are using polyester fiber filling to stuff the pillow, tie three sides of the pillow together and continue halfway around the fourth side before stopping to add the filling.

    • 6

Place the pre-made pillow or foam square inside the tied fleece pillow. If using fiber filling, fill the pillow with your desired density of fiber. Tie the remaining ties together to complete your pillow.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use pinking shears for cutting pillow ties to create a decorative edge to ties.

  • Do not pull roughly on ties or your fleece fabric may tear.
