Instructions for Knotting Pearls

Instructions for Knotting Pearls thumbnail
String and knot pearls

Pearls have a delicate surface that can be easily scratched by sharp objects or even friction from other pearls. A common practice to avoid this when stringing pearls is to tie a knot between each pearl bead. Pearls strung on thread must be restrung at least every two years, especially if they are worn frequently. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Make a wire needle. Use flush cutters to cut about 6 inches of wire, and fold it in half. Place the thread in the folded wire needle.

    • 2

Use the needle to string all the pearls onto a single strand of silk thread.

    • 3

String one half of the clasp onto the thread after you have strung the last pearl. Tie a knot just beneath the clasp to secure it in place.

    • 4

Pass the needle back through the last pearl. Use the free strand of thread to tie a knot around the thread coming out of the pearl. The knot should be just beneath the pearl and as close to it as possible.

    • 5

Take the needle through the next pearl. Tie another knot, using the process in step 4. Repeat this step for the remaining pearls.

    • 6

String the second half of the clasp onto the silk thread and tie a knot just beneath it. Cut the excess silk thread.
