How to Find Old Trucks

Contact several local dealerships. Dealerships keep in contact with local vehicle auctions as well as antique dealers. Contacting a dealership can give you many leads to different classic car dealers within your area.

2
Talk to your family, friends and neighbors (especially older ones). Many older relatives and friends may have saved a truck they once drove or may have a vintage truck that was handed down to them. Because making an older truck drivable takes some money and time, many people let their antiques go to waste in their garages. You may find the best deal you can get for an older truck will come from a family member or friend that you didn't know owned a classic vehicle.

Look into local classic car events. Many people with classic cars will take part in local classic vehicle events. Throughout the year they gather at specific places to showcase their vintage and restored cars. You can attend these events to talk with the owners of the vehicles. By talking directly with other people who restore old cars and trucks, you can find out where to purchase an old truck and from whom. Many of the people who participate in these events also sell the classic vehicles they restore.

Go to a car museum. Many cities will have classic car and truck museums. The museum's director or curator can get you in touch with some local sellers or antique vehicle dealers that you can contact.

Search your local newspaper's Want Ads for leads into finding an old truck. There will be specific sections for "vehicles" within the Want Pages that you can search through. Once you've found the vehicle you'd like to look into, contact the seller. Always set up a meeting before purchasing the vehicle.

Use the Internet to find your vintage truck. When searching the Internet, keep a few things in mind: location, seller, safety and expertise. The truck should be within a close location to your house: Antique vehicles should not be driven over large mileage unless you know it can handle it (so don't purchase an old truck in California if you are from the Great Lakes Region). Get to know the seller: Contact the seller and ask as many questions as you can to get to know him or her as well as the vehicle. You want to make sure that you're not going to be getting ripped off. Stay safe when purchasing anything from off line: see the vehicle first-hand before purchasing and always take someone with you. Never go to any location by yourself. It's always best to also meet in a public location. If you're just getting into the hobby of purchasing/restoring classic vehicles, always take an expert with you. Someone extremely knowledgeable will ensure you get a fair price and will ensure the truck is still in a decent condition.
