How to Troll Trout in a Kayak
Trolling is a fishing technique that involves moving your boat, canoe or kayak through the water, while dragging a fishing line with a lure behind you. Kayaks move silently through the water and are an excellent way to troll for trout or other freshwater fish. To successfully troll for trout, know where the trout are, the best times to fish and what techniques are most effective for catching trout.

1
Select a line for your fishing rod. Troll lines can be differentiated by the number of blades and by the length of the cable The blades of the troll attract the trout with their flash, causing them to go after the lure.

2
Pick a time when trout are most likely to hit. The best time in the summer to go trolling for trout is in the early morning. Trout will also hit better when the sky is clear and the waters are calm.

3
Find trout hot spots. Trout will be in areas where they can hide readily and have protection, such as around rocks, trees that overhang, docks and shady areas. Trout will also congregate where there are deep places or drop-offs; look for steep banks. Trout can also be found close to food sources; watch for areas with small fish or swarms of insects.

Move your kayak through the water slowly, varying the speed at times and trying to not move in a straight line. Moving your kayak in an "S" curve is optimal as it causes the lure to vary in the depth it goes and the speed will also vary. The more natural the motion of the lure, the better the chance of the trout being attracted and taking the bait.

Tips & Warnings
Jerking the fishing rod sharply a few times or allowing it to go still for a few minutes and sink deeper into the water is also tempting for the trout. Try to mimic the trout's prey and signal that this is an easy meal.
