How to Use a Photo Tent With Daylight Lights

How to Use a Photo Tent With Daylight Lights thumbnail
Photographing inside a light tent can help create smooth, even light on your subject.

Light tents cast a very even, almost shadow-free light across objects inside the tent. They are ideal for photographic reflective objects like highly polished metals or glass. Daylight balanced lights work well with both film and digital cameras. With digital cameras, your camera must be set as it would for outdoor shooting. Daylight balanced lights include flashes or daylight balanced fluorescent and incandescent bulbs.

Instructions

    • 1

Position one light on the side of the light tent pointing directly at the side. Because of the internal reflections inside the tent, you may only need this light.

    • 2

Position a second light, if desired, behind the object to create strong edge definition. Strictly speaking, this light is optional but can give nice results with many objects.

    • 3

Set your white balance on your digital camera to daylight. Different cameras will indicate this in different ways, but most use a sun indicator. Although you can use the automatic white balance setting, ambient light may affect the final setting. If you are using film, select a daylight balanced film. Daylight films are the most common.

Make a number of test exposures to check light position and detail and make your final exposure.

Tips & Warnings

  • In some cases, you can take a light tent outside in bright sunlight for very good results.
