How to Macrame a Hat Band
Hatbands can add personality and style to a simple hat. Since macrame is a craft that involves tying knots into decorative patterns, it is a great way to make a unique hatband. You can use a variety of materials depending on the desired finished look, including nylon, string, silk, yarn or hemp. Most of these materials come in many different colors, allowing you to create a hatband that fits your particular style.

1
Use the tape measure to measure around the hat where you will place the hatband. This will be your finished hatband length. Multiply that number by 4. This will be the length of your cords.
-
2
Cut five cords to the determined length. Cut two additional cords 8 inches long. Dip all of the ends into wax or glue and allow them to dry completely before continuing to prevent them from fraying.

3
Take one of the 8-inch cords and use pins to hold it taut on the project board. Attach the five long cords to it with Larks Head Knots, folding them in half in the process.
-
4
Take the fifth cord from the left (cord 5) and move it off down and to the left and hold it taut with a pin to your project board so that it is laying diagonally over cords 1 through 4. Take cord 6 and move it off down and to the right and hold it taut with a pin to your project board so that it is laying diagonally over cords 7 through 10. Cords 5 and 6 are your holding cords.
-
5
Use the Double Half Hitch to attach cords 1 through 4 to cord 5 and to attach cords 7 through 10 to cord 6. The result should be a line of knots that is forming the top half of a diamond.
-
6
Take cord 5 and move it off down and to the right, toward the center of the hatband, so that it lies across cords 1 through 4 diagonally. Take cord 6 and move it off down and to the left, towards the center of the hatband, so that it lies across cords 7 through 10 diagonally. Attach cords 1 through 4 to cord 5 and cords 7 through 10 to cord 6 using the Double Half Hitch. Take cord 5 and use the Double Half Hitch to attach it to cord 6 to complete the diamond.
-
7
Repeat Steps 4 through 6 until the hatband reaches the desired finished length as measured.
-
8
Use pins to hold the second 8-inch cord to the project board and use the Double Half Hitch to attach all of the cords to it, making sure they are snug. Use glue to attach the ends of the cords on the back of the hatband.
-
9
Attach the finished hatband to your hat using glue.

Tips & Warnings
Securing the cords to a project board such as hard foam or a firm pillow will keep the cords taut while you work.
You will need to adjust the dimensions if you use a thinner or thicker material.
