Complete the required education. Complete a paralegal program through a community college. These programs take two years of full-time study to complete and will earn you an associate's degree in paralegal studies. Find programs in your area by contacting the California Alliance of Paralegal Association.

Set up a testing date. The state of California offers certification through the state; however, there is a national certification program. The National Association of Legal Assistants (NALA) offers certification. According to the NALA, you quality to take the certification exam if you've graduated from an associate's degree program in paralegal studies. As of 2010, the exam fee is $275 for non-members and $250 for members.
