Converting Microsoft Visio files to Microsoft Excel files is a simple process. Microsoft purposely builds in compatibility between all of its utility-based software to create an integrated experience that makes completely tasks with each program much easier. While converting files between Visio and Excel may sound like a difficult task, it is actually quite simple with the proper instructions.

Open your Microsoft Excel software and create a new workbook. Click on "File" from the top menu and click "Save" from the subsequent menu. Click "Close" from the "File" menu when you are done saving. Do not close the Excel program completely, just the new file that was just created.

Select the objects that contain the information you need in your Visio program and click the "Tools" menu from the top of the screen. On the next menu, click "Export to Database." Under the "Cells to Export" list, click each cell you do not wish to import and click "Delete." Under the "Names" list, click "Excel Files" to load the database of Excel files that can be converted.

Navigate to the Excel file that you just created and click on it to select it. Type "itemID" into the "Field" box under the "Export to Database" window. Click "OK" and the Visio objects will be converted and saved to your Excel document.
