Instructions

    • 1

Remove any upholstery covers, or cushion covers. If they are washer safe, put them in the washer. Add a cup of vinegar, and a quarter cup of baking soda, along with color safe detergent, to the wash load to neutralize the dog urine odor.

If they cannot be put in the washer wash them and dry them as directed.

    • 2

Start blotting the moisture from the spot your dog urinated on. Do not rub; this will only spread the stain. Use a wad of paper towels and push down with your foot or the palm of your hand. Keep blotting until you are no longer getting any wetness when you blot. If the stain is already dry, or it is an old stain, you can skip this step and move to step three.

    • 3

Use a carpet cleaning solution to disinfect the urine spot. You can use a enzymatic pet stain cleaner or homemade solution. Homemade vinegar disinfectant can be mixed by combining 1 cup of distilled vinegar and 2 cups of warm water. Saturate the urine spot with the cleaning solution of your choice. If you have removable cushions it is best to take them off the couch and put something beneath them to catch the moisture that runs through. If you do not have removable cushions, use a spray bottle, and spray the spot until it is damp, but not saturated enough to soak through.

    • 4

Wait about five minutes for the cleaning solution to set in. After the five minutes has passed use paper towels to blot the cleaning solution dry. As in step two, keep blotting until you are no longer able to get moisture from the spot.

    • 5

Sprinkle the spot with baking soda. Cover the stained area completely.

    • 6

Put 1 cup of club soda in a spray bottle. With gloves on your hands, slowly mix the club soda and baking soda together to make a thick paste. Avoid over saturating the furniture; the paste should be ground in not soaked in. You can also use a mixture of 1 cup peroxide and a tsp. of non-petroleum-based dish detergent, but this mixture may fade fabric.

Let the baking soda paste dry on the dog urine stain. When the paste is completely dry use your vacuum to get it off the stain.
