How to Do the Moonwalk in a Circle

How to Do the Moonwalk in a Circle thumbnail
Make sure you have a smooth surface for your moves.

The moonwalk circle is more commonly referred to as the circle slide or circle glide among breakers. Rather than turning in circles, the dancer is performing multiple series of straight line slides with the feet and rotating the body in the direction the feet are traveling to achieve the appearance of spinning in circles with the feet gliding over the ground.

Things You'll Need

  • Flat, smooth-bottomed shoes
  • Smooth dancing surface

Instructions

  1. Circle Glide

    • 1

Start with right foot about 1 foot in front of left, knees slightly bent.

    • 2

Place weight on the ball of the left foot and plant firmly on the ground. Slide the right foot backward, keeping it completely flat, until it is past your left foot. Your right foot is gliding over the ground.

    • 3

Plant the ball of the right foot onto the ground.

    • 4

Pivot approximately 120 degrees on the ball of the right foot and the heel of the left foot.

    • 5

Plant the ball of the left foot.

    • 6

Glide the right ball of the foot backward past the left foot.

    • 7

Plant the right ball of the foot and pivot 120 degrees on the right ball and left heel.

    • 8

Continue the pattern of "plant-glide-pivot" one additional time to achieve a full circle-glide rotation.

Tips & Warnings

  • When practicing at home, wearing socks rather than shoes can help you learn to glide your feet more easily.

  • Practice slowly, one move at a time, mastering the mechanics before trying to do the move quickly.
