How to Contest an Unfair Speeding Ticket thumbnail
Speeding tickets can be costly.

Most people believe that when they get a speeding ticket that they must pay the outlandish fee and then take the increases from the insurance company, too. This is not always the case and for the amount of time that this offense will remain on your driving record it is well worth it to give it your all and attempt to fight the ticket if you believe that you have a sufficient defense.

Instructions

    • 1

Gather all of the information about the incident together well before the court date. This will allow you to see what the police officer has written down about what he saw when he gave you the speeding ticket. Doing this will allow you to prepare a good defense. You can obtain this information at the court that issued the ticket. There may or may not be a modest fee involved.

    • 2

Bring any witnesses that are in your favor with you the day of court. Make sure they are dressed appropriately and are prepared to speak in front of the judge.

    • 3

Prepare your defense and make sure that you bring all evidence with you the day of court.

    • 4

Show up to court professionally dressed and at least 15 minutes before your case is scheduled to be heard.

    • 5

Take notes while the officer that issued your ticket is explaining his side of what happened to the judge. This will allow you to be better prepared when it is your turn to speak. Never interrupt anyone in court. Be sure to cite any discrepancies.

    • 6

Make eye contact and speak professionally when you approach the judge. Rationally explain your side of the story.

    • 7

Request an appeal if the judge rules against you or simply pay the ticket. You can also try to plead your ticket down to a lesser offense.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the officer that issued the ticket is not present, than ask for the case to be dropped.

  • Do not use mundane excuses in court.
