IP addresses can be blocked in Internet Explorer.

There are many reasons to block certain websites in the Internet Explorer web browser; from keeping prying young eyes off certain sites on a family computer to preventing access to Internet time wasters on a company computer. While blocking a website's domain name works most of the time, there may be instances when you'll also want to block the numerical label of the domain, referred to as the IP address. Fortunately, Internet Explorer has that ability already built in via the "Content Advisor."

Instructions

    • 1

Navigate to Internet Explorer on your PC and launch the application.

    • 2

Open "Tools > Internet Options" in the menu bar. If the menu bar is not visible, right-click on any other available tool bar and be sure the "Menu Bar" option is checked.

    • 3

Click "Content > Content Advisor > Enable" in the dialog box that appears. If this is your first time using the Content Advisor you will be prompted to create a password before continuing. Make sure the password you choose is easy to remember, but hard to guess for other users--this password will be what prevents them from viewing blocked websites.

    • 4

Click "Settings > Approved Sites" under Content Advisor. In the text box under the slightly misleading label "allow this website" add the IP address that you wish to block. Click "Never" then "OK" to exit the Content Advisor. Click "OK" to exit Internet Options. The IP address is now blocked, and Internet Explorer will prompt for a password whenever a user attempts to access it.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you need more advanced filtering/blocking, you may want to consider adding a firewall to your computer or network.
