How to Troubleshoot a CD Drive for a Dell Inspiron 5100
The Dell Inspiron 5100 is a popular line of laptop computers from one of the largest producers of Windows-based computers. The laptop has a built-in CD drive that allows you to play music and install software. However, eventually you may experience some difficulties with the disk drive and find your CDs don't function properly. If you begin to see issues with the drive, correct the problems as quickly as possible.

1
Open the CD drive on your Dell Inspiron 5100 and spray a few shots of compressed air into the disk drive. With the way the CD drive opens and closes, it is easy for dust and hair to enter the computer and stick to the lens of the drive. Spraying the compressed air into the drive helps remove any such dust and hair.

2
Inspect the tray of the CD drive that ejects from the computer. Remove any debris that is on the tray. Anything stuck to the tray will affect your CD playback.

-
3
Look on the bottom of your CD. If your CD is dirty in any way, the playback problem probably is with your CD and not the Dell Inspiron 5100.
-
4
Open your Internet browser if the Dell Inspiron 5100 isn't recognizing your CD at all. Occasionally, when removing items from your computer, you can accidentally delete a system driver. If your CD drive's driver has been deleted, you must restore the driver so your computer can use the drive again.

Navigate to the Dell website, select "Support" and enter in the Dell Inspiron 5100 as the model type. Download the provided driver for your CD drive. Once it has finished downloading, double-click the file to open the installation wizard, then follow the brief set of prompts to complete the driver installation. You computer now will recognize your CD drive again.
