How to Sew a Flanged Duvet Cover
-
1
Place the sheets, right sides facing each other, flat on your work surface. Match up the top finished edges of the sheets. Use straight pins to secure the two sheets together so that they do not slip when sewing.
-
2
Sew a 1/4-inch seam around three sides of the sheets, starting at one of the top corners. Leave the top end open, so that it is like one big pillowcase. Trim the corners and turn right side out. Press the edges flat with the iron.

Top-stitch a straight line 3 inches in from the right edge, starting at the top right-hand corner of the duvet. Sew from the top edge of the duvet all the way down the right-hand side. Repeat this for the bottom and left side. Leave the top end open. Your stitched lines will cross, creating a small box at each corner. This creates the flanged edge for the duvet cover.
-
4
Place buttons 3 inches down from the top edge, with the duvet cover right side up. Mark button placement with a pencil on both layers of fabric. Space the buttons evenly for a neat appearance.
-
5
Be creative with your choice of buttons. They do not have to all be the same. Make button holes on the top layer of the duvet. Sew the buttons inside the duvet cover, on the bottom sheet. Be sure they line up with the button holes.

Tips & Warnings
Flannel sheets are a nice choice for the duvet cover, especially for the bottom layer.
Buy sheets larger than the comforter or duvet you are planning to cover.
If you are covering a dark or patterned comforter, buy sheets thick enough, or dark enough, to hide the pattern.
