How to Clean an Episiotomy With a Water Bottle

How to Clean an Episiotomy With a Water Bottle thumbnail
A water bottle can be your best friend when healing from an episiotomy.

An episiotomy is the cutting of the perineum, or area between the vagina and rectum, during child birth. This may be done during a fast labor, or in the case of a very large baby. An episiotomy takes time to heal, and must be kept clean to avoid infection. A common household water bottle is a handy tool to help ensure the area remains free of bacteria. A water bottle with a squirt top is especially helpful.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the top of the water bottle and fill it with warm water. Replace the squirt top, if you have one. If you do not have a squirt top, do not cap the bottle.

    • 2

Squirt water on the area of the episiotomy, after urination, using the water bottle to ensure the area is clean. If you do not have a squirt top, gently pour the warm water over the vaginal area.

    • 3

Pat the area dry with a soft cloth or towel.

Tips & Warnings

  • Pour warm water over the vaginal area while urinating to reduce sting.

  • After bowel movements, wipe from front to back to avoid infection.
