How to Get Cheap Bereavement Travel Tickets

Bereavement airfares take some of the stress out of travelling when a loved one dies.

Dealing with the death of a loved one is stressful enough without having to worry about travel plans. If you need to go to a family member's funeral, you may be able to find reasonably-priced airline tickets from companies that offer bereavement fares. These special rates are available if the person who died is an immediate family member (e.g., spouse, parent, grandparent, child, aunt, uncle or sibling).

• Contact information for the hospice or hospital where your loved one was treated
• Contact information for the funeral home

Instructions

1. Shop around. Keep in mind that not all airlines have bereavement fares available. Even when an airline does offer a bereavement fare, it does not mean that it is the best available price.

2. Purchase tickets. If you cannot find a reasonably priced regular plane ticket online, you can buy a bereavement ticket in person or on the phone from the airline.

3. Provide required information. When booking your flight, the airline will ask for your relationship to the deceased; the name and telephone number of the hospital or hospice where your family member was being treated; or information about the funeral home.
