How to Install Cable Internet Modems
If you spend a lot of time on the Internet, consider a cable modem and Internet connection. Cable connections offer one of the fastest means of connection in terms of downloading and surfing speeds. For those interested in streaming videos and music, a faster connection means a more rewarding Internet experience. Installing a cable modem is something that even a novice can perform, which explains the proliferation of self-installation kits available from cable Internet service providers.

Inspect the contents of the box before beginning. In most cases you will be given a self-install kit that should contain everything that you need, including the modem and DSL cable. If you are purchasing a cable modem, read the box to determine whether or not the DSL cable is included.

Plug the DSL cable into the DSL or Ethernet port on the back of your computer. There is only one slot where this will fit. Plug the other end of the DSL cable into the back of the cable modem.

Plug the coaxial cable connection into the cable modem. There is only one connection point for this on the back of the modem. Make sure it is screwed in firmly but not over tightened.

Plug the AC adapter into the electrical outlet or power strip. Plug the other end of the adapter into the cable modem.

Insert the included CD into your optical drive. In many cases the modem will immediately connect to the internet. The CD will make certain that proper installation has taken place. Once the CD automatically starts, you may be requested to enter information regarding your Internet account. This varies by cable service provider. Once the information, if necessary, is provided click on "OK" and the installation is complete.
