How to Curl Hair With a Big Curling Iron
-
1
Wash, condition and dry your hair completely (with or without a hair dryer). Use a moisturizing product that will protect your hair from the heat of the curling iron.
-
2
Heat up a curling iron that is at least two inches in diameter by plugging it into a wall outlet near a mirror. Irons take five to ten minutes to get hot enough to use. Do not plug in near open water as this can create a dangerous or damaging situation if the iron falls in.

-
3
Use your writing hand to control the iron until you get the hang of it. Open the curling iron, by holding the handle with your hand and pushing the movable section down with your thumb.
-
4
Beginning with the hair around your face, use the big iron to clip a small section (one- to two-inches wide) at the top of your hair near the root. Slide the iron down to the bottom of the hair and curl the iron inward or outward--whatever direction you want the hair to go--a few turns.
-
5
Leave your hair in the iron for between 10 and 20 seconds. You can use the fingers of your free hand to touch the hair while it is being heated. This can help you gage how hot your hair is getting. Keeping the hair in the iron for too long can cause irreversible damage.
-
6
When you are ready to take the curling iron out, unroll toward the end of the hair and press the handle to release the clip. Immediately clip the newly curled section loosely on top of your head to allow it to cool.
-
7
Continue to curl and clip one- to two-inch sections until all of your hair has been curled. When the hair is cool, unclip all of the sections. For large, soft curls, use your fingers or a small comb to arrange your hair. Do not brush it. Use hairspray to hold the curls in place.

To use a big curling iron to take the frizz out of hair and give it some curl at the ends, use the same technique to get started. After clipping the section of the hair near the roots, pull the curling iron down slowly toward the tip, allowing it to remain on each piece of the section of hair for about two to three seconds until reaching the bottom. Once the iron is at the end of the hair, curl it under and hold there for 10--20 seconds.
-
9
To use a big curling iron to give your hair some volume without necessarily having curls or waves, follow the directions through Step 7. Then style your hair by bending it over and brushing it out gently after it has cooled down. Use the brush and your fingers to style completely before applying hair spray.

Tips & Warnings
Curling creme applied to wet hair after washing but before drying will help hold in the waves.
After it has cooled down, clean the curling part of the iron after each use with water.
Curling irons get very hot and can easily cause a severe burn.
Never leave your hair in an iron for longer than 30 seconds.
