How to Find a Missing Sugar Glider

Sugar gliders are small, exotic pets. They are marsupials that are native to Australia and Indonesia. Sugar gliders live in trees in the wild and are highly intelligent. Unfortunately, they are also small, measuring only about five to six inches in body length. They may hide if they become frightened, especially if they are new to your home and have not yet formed a bond with you.

Instructions

    • 1

Close off the room. Only do this if you are certain that the sugar glider is in that particular room. If your sugar glider could be anywhere in the house, close anyopen windows and secure other openings, such as pet doors, so that he cannot escape outside. Remove any pets that may be unfriendly to the glider. Pocket Pets recommends safety-proofing the house by closing the toilet lid and any other open water sources so that your glider cannot drown. Secure any chemicals, such as cleaning products.

    • 2

Search the upper parts of the rooms, as well as the darker corners. Sugar gliders seek out dark areas when they are frightened. They also tend to climb. Check your curtains, the top of the refrigerator and any other place your glider could climb to. Look behind the couch and under all other furniture.

    • 3

Place the sugar glider’s cage in the middle of the floor if you cannot find him by looking. Leave the door open and entice him to return to his cage by leaving treats in it. According to Pocket Pets, sugar gliders like fresh apples, applesauce and peach juice.

    • 4

Darken your house as much as possible. Close the curtains and turn the lights off. Wait by his cage with a flashlight. When your sugar glider returns to his cage, you’ll likely hear him jumping around.

    • 5

Leave the cage outside if your sugar glider is lost outside of the house. If he jumps and runs away from you, watch him to see where he goes and what he climbs. Place the cage, with treats inside, as close to where he disappeared as possible so that he can smell the treats. Then wait for him to return.
