      To clean the evaporator coil, turn off the air conditioner and unplug it. This makes it safe for you to clean the coil without worry of electrical shock.

      Locate the condenser evaporator coil. The evaporator coil is recessed. The air conditioner's manual usually supplies instruction and illustrations on where the evaporator coil is and how to reach it for cleaning.

      To remove the rust, use steel wool or a wire brush. Removing surface rust is important as a way to prevent the rust from spreading to other parts of the air conditioner.

      If scrubbing doesn’t remove all of the rust, then a homemade remedy may be needed. You can make a paste of cream of tartar, borax and hydrogen peroxide. To make the paste, use 1 tsp. of cream of tartar and 1/4 cup of borax. Add just a little hydrogen peroxide until a paste is made. Apply the paste to the evaporator coil. Wait 30 minutes and then wipe off the paste. If rust still remains, repeat the procedure.

      If the cream of tartar and borax paste doesn’t remove all of the rust, you may need to try commercial rust removers sold in hardware stores. These products have strong acids that dissolve the rust quickly. Read all of the instructions carefully to ensure safety.
