Skype is a website that allows users to make domestic and international telephone calls using the Internet. A cell phone or landline phone, as well as a carrier subscription, are not necessary. After the user downloads the software to his or her computer, calling a foreign country, such as Indonesia, is done in a series of easy steps. The program does not charge for calls made to someone else who also is using the Skype program. However, it does charge tolls for calls made to cell phones and landlines.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

  1. Calling a Contact

    • 1

Set up your headphones and make sure they are working by checking the volume control on your computer.

    • 2

Open the Skype program window. Make sure you have Skype credits, which you need to pay for calls to mobile phones and to landline telephones in Indonesia (you can add credits by clicking on the "Buy Skype Credit" button on the Skype home page). Click on the "Contacts" button.

    • 3

Find the name of the person you will be calling in your Contacts list (see below for the steps if they are not in your Contacts). If the person is on Skype at this time, the call will be free. The Contacts list will show their current status next to their name: a green icon if they are on Skype, a red icon if they are not. If they are not on Skype, you can still call them on their mobile or landline phone, which carries a charge.

    • 4

Click on the "Call" button. The phone will ring.

    • 5

If you cannot hear anything, click the "Call Quality" icon to adjust the sound. Make sure your computer's sound volume is set correctly. In Windows, there should be a small speaker icon on the toolbar at the bottom right of your screen. Mac users should open the System Preferences/Sound folder to adjust volume, which also can be done quickly on newer keyboards with F11 (volume down) and F12 (volume up) keys.

    • 6

Complete your call and click on the "End Call" button.

    Calling a Non-Contact

    • 7

Click on the "Buy Skype Credit" button on the Skype home page to buy credits if you need them to make a call to a mobile phone or landline phone in Indonesia.

    • 8

      Open the Skype program window.

    • 9

Click the "Call" tab, then click on the flag menu and find a small icon divided into red and white horizontal bands, representing the flag of Indonesia.

    • 10

Click on the adjoining box, and type in the phone number, using the international dialing code for Indonesia (011-62) and the person's mobile or landline number.

    • 11

Click the green "Call" button. When your call is finished, click the red "End Call" button.

Tips & Warnings

  • You also can use Skype as an instant messaging service, to upload and download files from other users, and to video conference.

  • Make sure you know the Skype tolls for Indonesia. Skype will charge you by the minute, and your contact's cell-phone carrier may also be charging for the call. Mobile rates are significantly higher than landline rates.
