Decorative Way to Hide a TV Over a Mantel
Hanging a TV over the mantle does not make it the focal point of the room. In fact, it can have the opposite effect, especially with larger ones that may take the focus off the fireplace if set up anywhere else in the room. Mount it at the same height you would your favorite painting, or family portrait and try out different decorative ways to hide it from view when not in use. Place a large decorative scarf over the unit when you are not watching it. Add some extra embellishments, such as tassels or fringe to the bottom of it, if it matches the rest of your decor.

Buy a TV cover or make one of your own if you are handy with crafts. Sew a custom fitted one or just a draping one. This allows you to incorporate the exact colors or themes to fit well within your room.

Build or have a custom wooden frame made to slip over the front of the TV when not in use. Stretch a like-sized painting over the frame and you'll have an instant decorative way to hide a TV over a mantel--one that mimics authentic artwork.

Build a decorative box to install at the top of the ceiling above the fireplace, or right above the television, using the same style of molding that is already in the room to ensure that it blends in. Install a long roller shade inside the box and paint or decoupage a picture on the front of the shade. Just simply pull that down for an innovative piece of artwork when not watching TV.

Have the Television unit installed directly into the wall itself above the fireplace if it is a non-working one for decoration purposes only or if there is enough room for a nook. (Smaller LCDs sometimes only need inches of space.) This makes it easy to find a decorative way to hide a TV over a mantle because all you would have to do is hang your original portrait or artwork up over it when you are not using it.
