How to Change AIX to a 64 Bit Kernel

IBM distributes AIX (Advanced Interactive eXecutive) as a series of operating systems that are based on certain versions of UNIX. AIX is compatible with both 32-bit and 64-bit PowerPC systems. This means that, to run AIX, you need a computer with a PowerPC processor or its instruction set will not be recognized. As of 2010, the latest version of AIX is 6.3, released on November 2007.

Instructions

    • 1

Start up AIX and wait until you get to the command screen.

    • 2

Type the command: "ln --sf /usr/lib/boot/unix_64 /unix" and "ln -sf /usr/lib/boot/unix_64 /usr/lib/boot/unix" to link the 64-bit files.

    • 3

      Type in: "lslv --m hd5".

    • 4

Create a boot image by entering: "bosboot -ad /dev/ipldevice".

    • 5

Reboot the system using a fast shutdown with instructions to boot up again immediately by typing: "shutdown --Fr".

Tips & Warnings

  • If you experience any problems following setup, check if your version of AIX supports using a 64-bit kernel. Such versions go from AIX 5.1 upward.
