How to Buy TV Media

Ten years ago there wasn't really a large market that allowed you to buy TV media. You could buy the occasional special collection of old classics like "The Johnny Carson Show" or "I Love Lucy" on an infomercial, and that was about it. Presently, though, there are a number of different ways that you can buy virtually any television program you can think of, including on DVD, Blu-Ray and even digital computer downloads.

Use an online or in-your-neighborhood electronics retailer. Stores like Best Buy and FYE, in addition to online retailers like Amazon, all have entire sections of product devoted to television programs available for purchase on both DVD and Blu-Ray media discs. You can browse through their selection of product and take your selection with you to the register (or add a product to your "virtual cart" and click "checkout" if you're shopping online). If you have the equipment necessary to play Blu-Ray discs (an HDTV and a Blu-Ray player), consider this as an option especially since more and more shows are being shot in true high-definition image quality.

Use the iTunes Digital Media Store. Open the iTunes software and click "iTunes Store." Then, click the "TV Shows" listing to browse the iTunes digital media store's selection of hundreds of thousands of different television shows that they have available for download. This differs from the methods described in Step 1 in that you are not purchasing a physical disc. Rather, the TV shows are stored on the digital computer file media. You can purchase individual episodes of shows or full seasons at a discounted price.

Use Amazon's Digital Media Store. Go to Amazon with your Web browser and click "Digital Downloads." Then, click "Video on Demand" to browse Amazon's listing of TV shows which are available for download. Just like the iTunes digital media store, Amazon does not offer these shows on a physical disc like you would get in Step 1. Instead, you are purchasing a digital media file that you will store on your computer. You can purchase individual episodes of shows or full seasons at a discounted price.
