How to Become a Dental Hygienist In California

Dental hygienists have an excellent job outlook, with significant growth through 2018 and expected earnings of $55,000 to $79,000 per year (in 2008). To become a dental hygienist in California, you need to complete an accredited dental hygiene program, pass the licensing exam and complete continuing education requirements every two years to renew your license. Continuing education and exams are both regulated by the Dental Hygiene Committee of California.

Instructions

1. Review the list of accredited California dental hygiene programs at the California Dental Hygienist Association (see Resources). While most of the dental hygiene schools are clustered around San Francisco and Los Angeles, you'll also find approved programs in places like Redwood, Shasta and Loma Linda.

2. Apply to programs of your choice. You can obtain an application by contacting the college's admissions department. Wait to hear back from programs after you apply..

3. Complete all required classes. You'll learn anatomy, pharmacology, nutrition, periodontology, clinical dental hygiene and radiography, among other topics.

4. Visit the Dental Hygiene Committee of California website to obtain the exam application and materials (see Resources). Fill out the application for the exam and pay the $525 fee (in 2010).

5. Wait to hear back from the committee with an exam date. On the appointed day, take your written dental hygiene exam. Once you pass that, you'll be scheduled for the clinical exam.

6. Pass the clinical exam to receive your license as a California dental hygienist. Now you can practice as a dental hygienist anywhere within California.
