How To Find Nursing Opportunities in Canada
Canadian healthcare institutions are currently grappling with a shortage of nurses--as many as 15,000 to 20,000 nurses, according to HealthStaff Worldwide Associates, a placement firm. Finding these thousands of nursing jobs may seem like a difficult task--thinking about where to look, how to search, or what organizations are reputable may be overwhelming. Fortunately, recruitment agencies, the national health ministry, and national and provincial nursing associations offer tools to make the search simpler.

1
Rely on online job boards to find Canadian nursing opportunities. Online job searching sites that focus on health care opportunities--like MedHunters--or specialize in nursing jobs in Canada--like CanadiaNurse--are one option in your search. Online job boards not only allow you to search for opportunities, but you can also post your resume online so that potential employers can find you. Although searching through lists of opportunities is free and does not require registration, some sites require a free registration to post resumes.

2
Search for nursing opportunities through Health Canada. Canada's ministry of health provides a wealth of resources for nurses who are looking for jobs in Canada's communities. Health Canada's website features opportunities sorted by geographical area as well as specialty. For example, Health Canada devotes a special section to primary care nursing opportunities in remote areas of Canada, helping aboriginal communities.

Use resources developed by the Canadian Nurses Association and its members. Individual provincial and territorial nurses' associations make up the Canadian Nurses Association; each individual organization features a job board that advertises nursing opportunities within that specific province or territory. The Canadian Nurses Association provides links to each of the member associations, so if you want to search for opportunities in a particular province--say, British Columbia--a link to the College of Registered Nurses of British Columbia allows you a quick way to access their search tools and links to nursing networks within the province.

Work through a nursing staff recruitment agency or placement firm. Recruitment agencies and placement firms work with potential candidates to find nursing opportunities within a desired area of Canada. Although some agencies may charge a fee to nurses who are looking for jobs, firms include advice on immigration policies, licensure and registration with their placement services.
