Instructions

  1. Setting Up the Garmin GPSMAP 196

    • 1

Remove the battery lid behind the receiver and install four AA batteries as indicated in the battery compartment.

    • 2

Rotate the antenna up in an open area where the receiver can acquire satellite signals.

    • 3

Turn the receiver on by pressing and holding the "Power" key located on the bottom left of the keypad on the front of the receiver. It is indicated by the image of a light bulb on the button. A tone will sound when the receiver comes on.

    • 4

Press the "Enter" key (middle left of the keypad and marked with the word "Enter") after reading the warning page that appears when the unit is first turned on.

    • 5

Press the "Power" key briefly (holding the key will turn the unit off) to call up the menu to adjust the backlight and contrast of the screen. A window will appear with two sliders that allow adjustment of the illumination of the screen. The vertical slider is the backlight adjustment slider and the horizontal slider is the contrast adjustment slider. Touch the sliders and drag the bar to the desired backlight and contrast levels. Specific options are displayed by pressing the "Menu" key above the "Power" key. Close the window by pressing the "Enter" or "Quit" key.

Pressing "Menu" twice calls up the main menu displayed on the left hand side of the screen. The rocker, a directional key located in the center of the keypad, allows easy movement through the options of the main menu. Selecting the top menu item labeled "GPS" will provide information on the satellite signals being received. Pressing the menu key again will bring up options for this information. These options include a simulator, WAAS capability, skyview orientation, manual entering of altitude and finding a new location.
