The Windows XP backup utility has the ability to save your computer's backups in a variety of locations, such as on your hard drive, on an external hard drive, or on removable media, such as a USB flash drive or ZIP disks. The one location that the Windows XP backup utility can't save your backups is on CDs or DVDs, but otherwise, you can create your backup disks with ease.

      Connect your backup media to your computer. Click the "Start" button, select "All Programs," open "Accessories," click on "System Tools" and then open the "Backup" program.

      Click "Next," click "Back up files and settings" and then click "Next."

      Select "All information on this computer" and then click the "Next" button.

      Click the "Browse" button and select your backup media where you want to save the backup from your computer and then click the "Next" button.

      Review the backup settings you have chosen and then click the "Finish" button to start the backup process.
