Hubs and switches are used to connect computers.

Four port switches are small networking devices used to link computers in a small home network. If you want to expand your network, you can still use the switch by adding a hub to your network. The computers attach to the hub, and the hub's uplink port is used to connect to the switch. This allows you to expand your network to support numerous computers.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the hub in close proximity to the four port switch. Turn off the switch and remove the ethernet cables connected to the switch.

    • 2

Connect one end of the ethernet cable to the uplink port on the hub. Insert the other end to a port on the switch. This connects the hub to the switch, providing you with more open ports for your network.

    • 3

Insert the ethernet cables that were previously connected to the switch to the hub. This moves your computers to the hub to consolidate your connections. Connect the ethernet cable for the fifth computer to the hub as well.

    • 4

Power on the switch and the hub. The computers are all connected to the switch through the additional hub. To test your changes, open a browser on one of the connected machines to ensure it has connectivity to the network. If Internet browsing is available, the computer is successfully connected.

Tips & Warnings

  • Some computers may need to be rebooted after moving them from the switch to the router. If connectivity is not successful, reboot the machine.
