How to Install Circle Patio Stones
Stone pavers can be used to create a variety of patio designs that can add aesthetic value to your yard space. Although most homeowners opt for square or rectangular patios, you can choose a circular design for an unusual look. The process of laying curved stone pavers is the same as for square pavers, but you must devote more time to planning your patio. Does this Spark an idea?

- 4-inch nail
- String
- White chalk
- 4-inch square stone pavers
- 4-by-8-inch stone pavers
- Shovel
- Measuring tape
- Level
- Crushed limestone gravel
- Tamper
- Construction-grade sand
- Rubber mallet
- Broom
- Garden hose

Tie one end of a piece of string to a 4-inch nail. Measure the string to equal the radius of your finished patio and mark the string. Tie the string around a piece of white chalk at this mark.

Push the nail into the ground at the spot where the center of your patio will be. Pull the string tight and make a circle with the chalk. This circle will be the outside edge of your patio.

Untie the chalk and move it 2 inches closer to the nail. Retie the chalk and make a second inner circle. The space between the two rings will house the "ring" bricks, which are 4-inch-square bricks stood on end to add strength and prevent the patio foundation from eroding.

Lay out the pavers in a dry run. Use square pavers for the three centermost courses, and rectangular pavers for the remaining courses. The pavers for the outer rings should be laid lengthwise, so that the outer courses are 8 inches wide.

Dig the inner circle to a depth of 7 inches. Dig the ring between the inner circle and the outer circle to a depth of 4 inches. Use a carpenter's level to make sure the sides are vertical and the floor of the patio pit is level.

Fill the inner circle with 4 inches of crushed limestone gravel. Pack the gravel down with a tamper. Cover the gravel with 1 inch of construction-grade sand. Pack down the sand and check to make sure it is level.

Place the inner circle pavers in place, just as you did during the dry run. Tap each paver in place with a rubber mallet. After you have completed the inner circle, set square pavers on end around the outer ring. Tap them into place with a rubber mallet.

Pour sand over the patio. Sweep it with a broom to push the sand into the joints between the pavers. Spray the patio with a hose to wash away excess sand. Allow the patio to dry overnight. Spread a small amount of sand over the patio and use a broom to fill in any gaps.
