How to Troubleshoot Disk Boot Failure

Fix a disk boot failure error.

If you boot up your computer and see a "Disk boot failure" message, there could be one of any number of problems with your computer that is causing it to fail to boot from your hard disk. By trying a series of steps to resolve the problem, you'll be able to both narrow it down and fix it in a relatively short amount of time.

Instructions

1. Verify that there are no CDs, DVDs, floppy disks or other removable media inserted into the computer. If there are, remove them and restart the computer.

2. Open the BIOS setup menu when the computer first starts up. The key to open the BIOS menu is displayed on the screen as the computer is first booting. Once inside the BIOS, change the "Boot Order" to have your hard drive as the number one device from which the system boots.

3. Ensure that your hard drive is fully attached to the computer's motherboard. If the hard drive has come loose from the motherboard, it can cause a boot disk failure error message. Turn the computer off, unplug it, open the case and check the connections on the hard drive cables to make sure that they are connected properly.
