Installing a radio in a 2005 Dodge Neon can be simplified if a harness adapter is used with the installation. When installing an aftermarket radio, the wires on the new radio will rarely match the wires on the OEM harness. Each of the wires on the original harness needs to be tested to determine which are the speaker wires and to which speaker they are connected. A harness adapter, which plugs directly into the radio and into the original harness, can be purchased for any radio.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the reveal molding covering the radio screws. This is the ornamental dash cover molding. Use the pocket-sized screwdriver to gently pry up the molding, which is held in with trim fasteners that are snapped into holes on the dash. When the first trim fastener comes out, the molding can be pulled out carefully by hand.

    • 2

Remove the four screws securing the radio to the dash, using the 7-mm socket driver. Pull the radio out of the dash and disconnect the electrical plug in the back of the radio. Pull the antenna out of the radio. Pull the radio the rest of the way out of the dash.

    • 3

Install the outside security cover on the new radio. Determine which faceplate matches the hole in the dash used for the radio. Remove the radio security cover, install the faceplate and reinstall the security cover.

    • 4

Open the glove compartment. Remove the screws securing the glove box to the dash, using the Phillips head screwdriver. Remove the glove compartment. Hold the radio up to the dash, close to the hole. Plug the harness adapter on the radio and the original harness. Plug in the antenna.

    • 5

Push the wires behind the radio up and out of the way and insert the radio. Lift the tabs on the security cover with the small screwdriver. The precut tabs on the security cover are designed to be lifted as close as possible to the backside of the dash to prevent the radio from coming out. The glove compartment hole allows access to the back of the dash above and below the radio. Lift the tabs on the top and bottom of the radio.

Reinstall the glove box in reverse order of removal. Install the reveal molding by aligning the trim fasteners and pushing them in.
