1
Decide if the window will have a window stool or just casing. A window stool is the flat piece of wood at the bottom of some windows that looks similar to a small shelf.

2
Measure the width of the window unit. Measure the window from the outside edge to the outside edge where the shims fit between the window and the two-by-four wall studs. This is the width of the window. If you are adding a stool, you will need to add the width of the window trim for both sides of the window and 2 inches to the window width. However, if you are just installing the window casing you do not want to add the extra 2 inches. Multiply this distance by two for the top and bottom section of the window casing needed.

Measure the height of the window unit. Measure the window unit from the outside edges at the top to the bottom of the window unit. Again this is to the edge of the window where the window is separated from the wall framing by wooden shims. Multiple this length by two for both sides of the trim needed for the window. You may need a stepladder to reach the top of the window for measuring.

Determine the number of pieces of the window casing that is required to trim out the window. Window casing comes in 16-foot, 12-foot, and 8-foot lengths. Divide the lengths of casing into the trim lengths to determine the required number of pieces needed. When casing an entire house of window units, the window casing is delivered in 16-foot lengths from the trim company. You do not want any cuts within the casing so calculate for complete pieces of trim to surround the window.
