How to Change the Settings on a Linksys Modem for Apple iChat
If you are having trouble using Apple iChat on your computer, it may be because it is not allowed by your Linksys modem or router. Therefore, some configuration changes may need to be done to your modem to allow iChat to work properly. This is a relatively simple process that requires a little focus, but it should be accomplished in a few easy steps.

Get the IP address of your computer. You will need the information to tell your Linksys modem where to route the iChat traffic. This can be obtained by opening a command prompt and typing "ipconfig" without the quotes. Make note of this IP address.

Open a web browser to communicate with the LinkSys modem. Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome and Safari have all been shown to communicate effectively with Linksys routers and modems.

Enter the IP address of your Linksys modem into the address bar. If you did not change any of the factory settings the IP address will typically be 192.168.0.1. Otherwise, you will need to consult your notes from your initial install of the modem.

Login to the Linksys modem. If you did not change the factory settings the username and password are both typically "admin" without the quotes. However, if you did change these default settings you will need to consult your notes.

Get the IP address of your computer. You will need the information to tell your Linksys modem where to route the iChat traffic. This can be obtained by opening a command prompt and typing "ipconfig" without the quotes. Make note of this IP address.

Change port forwarding settings. You will want to forward traffic from the following ports to the IP address of your computer: 5060, 5190, 5297, 5298, 5353, 5678 and 16384 through 16403. These settings can be changed by going to the Applications & Gaming tab and then clicking on Port Range Forward.

Save your settings. Click on the button at the bottom to save the settings. This will reboot your Linksys modem and save the settings to the configuration. It may take up to one minute for the router to reboot so you can see if the settings stayed.

Check to see if Apple iChat is working. Start your iChat program and see if you are able to communicate with anyone. If all works well, traffic from iChat will flow through your LinkSys modem and be redirected to your computer.

Tips & Warnings
If you do not know the IP address of your router, you can look at the network settings on your computer and find the gateway address. This is the address of your Linksys router or modem.
If you cannot remember the username or password of your Linksys router or modem, you can use the reset button on the back to reset it to factory settings. This will, however, lose all of your current settings.
Opening ports on your router or modem means you are opening more ways for intruders to get into your network. While the firewall part of the router or modem is still working for you, just be aware that you have opened small windows into your network.
