How to Troubleshoot an RV Power Converter

Power converters allow you to run power through your battery.

A power converter converts DC (12 volt) currency into AC (120 volt) currency. This device can come in handy if you have to stop somewhere that does not have a place to plug in your RV. A power converter will allow you to run all your appliances like the refrigerator and TV off of the RV's battery. Power converters also prevent electrical items from blowing circuits. If your power converter breaks there are a variety of ways to troubleshoot it before paying for expensive repairs.

Instructions

1. Check for blown out circuits if there is no power after the shore power is disconnected. If the circuits are blown, switch them back to operating or you may have to replace them.

2. Check the contacts on the battery. They should be clean and free of corrosion.

3. Replace the battery. A dead or bad battery may cause the power converter to not work.

4. Connect the shore power line to the battery by bypassing the main battery power. This is done by avoiding connecting the ground wire to the battery.

5. Check the relay contacts or diodes if the lights flicker or dim when you turn them on.
