The "pagefile.sys" is a virtual memory file used on Windows computers. The file is used when the physically installed random access memory (RAM) is filled on the computer. After the physical memory is filled, the Windows operating system uses virtual memory. Virtual memory settings are controlled by the operating system by default. However, users can change the settings on the computer through Windows.

Click the Windows "Start" button and select "Control Panel." Double-click the "System" icon to open your system settings.

Click the "Advanced" tab. In this tab, click the "Settings" button in the section labeled "Performance." In the window that opens, click the "Advanced" tab again. In the section labeled "Virtual Memory," click "Change."

Click the hard drive that contains the page file. For most users, this is the "C" drive. Click the "Custom size" button. This opens a dialog box that prompts you for the new page file settings.

Enter a smaller value than what is displayed by default. The value is in megabytes. Click the "OK" button.

Click the "Restart" button when prompted to restart the machine. Reducing the size of a page file requires a system reboot for the changes to take effect.
