How to Add Sand to Clay Soil

How to Add Sand to Clay Soil thumbnail
Sand can improve the quality of clay soil.

Soil types differ greatly depending on your geographical location. Some regions have sandy soils while others have clay soils. The main problem with heavy clay soils is that plants have trouble growing due to roots having difficulty pushing through the dense clay. This problem can be fixed simply by adding a bit of sand to the soil. When done correctly, the soil will be loose enough that roots can grow into it, but also dense enough to be able to hold its structure and support a plant. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Clear the soil of rocks and weeds.

    • 2

Spread an even layer of sand on the surface of the soil. In most cases, 2 inches of sand is more than enough to improve the soil.

    • 3

Mix the soil and sand together with the tiller. The amount of soil in the mixture should be equal to the amount of sand; so if you add 2 inches of sand, you must mix it with at least 2 inches of soil. It is better to have a little more soil than sand because sand isn't able to hold the necessary structure that plants need to grow.

Feel the consistency of the mixed soil. If the soil and sand appear to be mixed thoroughly, smooth out the surface with a rake. If the mixture still looks uneven, continue to till until it is ready. Since the consistency of each material is so different, it will be easy to tell when they are mixed.
