How do I Hook Up My DIRECTV Receiver to My AV Receiver?

DIRECTV is one of the most popular choices in home satellite entertainment, offering high-quality picture and sound. To get the most out of your DIRECTV receiver, however, you will want to connect it to an external audio receiver or amplifier for home theater-quality sound. Connecting the DIRECTV receiver to an audio receiver will help to improve the enjoyment of your satellite television.
Plug in your DIRECTV receiver and AV receiver into an available power outlet.
Connect your DIRECTV receiver's video input to the video output on your television. Depending on your TV and receiver model, this will either be a yellow RCA port, HDMI port or component video (which has three RCA video cables). You may also be able to connect your video input into your audio receiver. Consult your product manuals for more information on video output.
Plug the white and red RCA audio cables into the color-coded ports on the back of your DIRECTV receiver labeled "Audio Output."
Plug the other end of the white and red RCA audio cables into the audio input on your AV receiver. The inputs will also be color-coded and labeled with a specific input number.
Switch your AV receiver to the audio input number you just plugged your DIRECTV receiver into by using the "Source" button on your AV receiver remote.

- Some DIRECTV receivers offer digital audio output through an optical audio cable. This will offer higher audio quality, but will also require an AV receiver with optical audio input. Consult the user manuals for your equipment to see if this is an option.
