Security is a major topic of concern for many computer users, especially as society moves toward a greater reliance on computers to store confidential data. It is not unusual for someone to have most of the sensitive information that relates to their lives on their computer. If this describes you, then you may want to learn how protect folders on your computer from prying eyes.

Instructions

  1. For a Windows operating system

      Navigate to the folder which you want to protect, and right-click on it.

      Select "Properties," and then click on the tab labeled "Security."

      Click to highlight a user name for which you want to add or remove permission to the folder in question. Click on "Remove" to protect the folder from the highlighted user.

      Click to place check mark(s) in the appropriate check boxes, giving specific permissions such as Full Control, Modify, Read and Execute. Click "Ok" to finish.

    For a Mac operating system

      Navigate to the folder which you want to protect, and right-click on it. Select "Get info."

      Click the arrow next to the words "Sharing & Permissions," and then click the small icon that looks like a lock at the bottom of the window.

      Enter your system password when prompted, and click on "OK."

      Click to highlight a user name for which you want to add or remove permission to the folder in question. Click on "Subtract" to protect the folder from the highlighted user. Click to highlight a user and then click on one of the options to change their privileges.

      Click to place a check mark in the check box labeled "Locked" to complete the process.

Tips & Warnings

  • These measures will only work if you log out from your user account when away from your computer. Leaving your computer logged on while you are away will leave you vulnerable to unauthorized viewing of folders.
