How to Paint Casement Windows

Exterior windows receive the brunt of the abuse from the weather and sun. Oftentimes, casement windows will begin to chip or fade over time. Casement windows are windows that open like small doors. To prevent your windows from discoloring or losing their aesthetic qualities, paint them with an exterior latex paint. Choose a dry day to paint. Make sure that the weather forecast predicts at least two dry days before starting the project. Restore the exterior of your home by painting your casement windows.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose an exterior latex color that either matches your home's exterior or the other window paint. Pick out a primer to use. Primer allows the paint to stick on the windows. Without primer, it can be hard to cover up old paint or prolong the life of the paint job.

    • 2

Lay a piece of plastic on the ground to pick up any paint splatters. Place painter's tape on the hinges of the casement windows.

    • 3

Clean the casement windows with household cleaner. Make sure that you get the wood holding onto the glass. For removing mold, mix up one part bleach and nine parts water in a spray bottle and spray the moldy areas. Wipe dry.

    • 4

Scrape off any loose paint with a putty knife. Remove any loose caulking. Sand the casement window using a 100-grit piece of sandpaper. You can use a palm sander for efficiency. Clean off the sand and debris.

    • 5

Caulk any gaps in the casement windows. Have a rag on hand to wipe up any caulking that may get on the glass. Allow the caulking to dry. Cut a piece of newspaper and use double-sided tape to attach it to the window.

    • 6

Open the lid to the primer and stir. Dip a paint brush with natural bristles into the primer. Paint casement windows from the window edges, top, bottom, sides, sash and frame. Allow the primer to fully dry for one day.

    • 7

Mix up your paint for the casement window and apply in the same order that you applied the primer. Allow the paint to dry before use.

Tips & Warnings

  • Remove the window sash and place on a saw horse to paint for an easy method of painting the sash.

  • Replace any windows that are cracked to avoid losing air from your house.
